Welcome from the Director
Good management of public service and nonprofit organizations is the result of quality
professional training and individual commitment to excellence. The George W. Romney Institute
of Public Management has designed its MPA program to meet the needs of students who
want to develop their management skills. This is accomplished through rigorous career training
in management, the application of these interdisciplinary concepts to the real world, and
the integration of analytical, communication, and technical skills that are necessary in a
global environment. The program distinguishes itself by balancing a deep commitment to public
and nonprofit service with the development of essential management skills. Both quality
sets are essential in preparing leaders who can meet the challenges of the public sector with
integrity, skill, and dedication. Students leave the Romney Institute with the capability and
creativity to effect crucial changes in government and nonprofit organizations and with a
strong sense of their responsibility to the community and the world.
The culture and major theme of the Institute is best summarized by this statement made many
times by George W. Romney: "Only people can solve people problems. Welcome to those who choose
public or nonprofit service as their career, but don't forget that it is the voluntary
sector—churches, charities, and individual volunteers who reach out to others and lift them
one by one—that is essential in order to keep this country the great nation it has always been."
Welcome to the George W. Romney Institute of Public Management and the Master of
Public Administration program in the Marriott School at Brigham Young University.
